In the summer of 2016, my classmate Chiara and I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the Summer School of Canada's National Ballet School (NBS) for about four weeks. During this period, I had a very valuable experience, learning from great teachers and also from other talented students.
The classes started in the morning and ended in the afternoon or sometimes even in the evening. The daily schedule consisted of ballet, pointe and classical variations, pool conditioning and modern or improvisation. Because Chiara and I were there as exchange students, we were in a class with the other exchange students of around our age and the students of NBS. The classes took some getting used to but after a while, I was able to enjoy the moment and take in as much as possible.
The pool conditioning class was very difficult for me, as I have never done such exercises before. There were exercises such as running forward in deep water without touching the ground. The class was exhausting but this allowed me to build up my stamina – so it was very helpful.
Modern and improvisation classes were interesting. I had improvisation for the first two weeks, where I learned many improvisation techniques, tried them out, and received advice. I had never taken improvisation class before, so it was not easy but also intriguing. In modern class, I learned different techniques from the ones I learn at the School of the Hamburg Ballet.
At the end of the program, there was a small performance of student choreographies. Both Chiara and I were able to take part in this performance, although we were in different pieces. I was amazed at what the students both younger and older than me choreographed, and I became very inspired by them.
This Summer School was a fantastic once-in-a-lifetime experience where I had the chance to improve my dancing, learn different techniques, and make new friends. And I am very thankful to everyone who made this all possible!
